Lighting is critical to the display of any art collection. When we are designing a residence and have created a floor plan with fixed locations for the furniture and artwork, then recessed ceiling fixtures or surface-mounted light fixtures are a great architectural solution with a clean look. In a residence where the client may change the display of artwork frequently, track lighting is a solution that allows greater flexibility to adjust the lighting as needed for the new arrangement. With both of these approaches, the lamp in the fixture determines the type of light that is provided and can range from a wide beam of light that gently washes a wall to a focused beam of light accenting certain pieces on the wall. Both approaches can and are used together. And of course, there is the picture light mounted directly above the piece which creates a more intimate display. In selecting any lighting system, consider energy efficiency which can be addressed through the use of energy efficient light fixtures and dimmers.
